Meetings

This section is something i always wanted to see at fansites. The idea is that here you can write in and tell your personal experience with Dave. How you met him at a convention, had a beer with him afterwards, bumped into his car or anything like it. I always loved reading these things when i found them, so please don’t hesitate and mail me yours (webmaster@davegibbonsfansite. com).

DREDDCON 2000 IN LONDON

Okay, to get this section started i will begin with my personal little meeting with Dave. I had never been to a convention before and was about to meet my favorite artist, so i was really really excited. I had e-mailed Dave before and he wrote that i should just come up to him and introduce myself (it sounded easy). It rained the whole day, so i was really wet, when i arrived at the con. It was much smaller than i imagined. The staff was really friendly. I got a badge, where i had to write my name on, so that everyone could recognize each other. I had not been there for two minutes and already Alan Davis was walking past me. Amazing. After a few minutes i saw Mr. Dave Gibbons himself. I was too shy to talk to him at first, so i followed him around a while. He talked to everyone who set up a table at the con and was more than nice to everyone. That gave me a little push and i gathered all my courage and went up to his table and introduced myself, just when he was unpacking his lunch...... So he asked me to come back later, when he would sign stuff, which is what i did. I already stood in line when he came to his signing table and he recognized me and greeted me very very friendly when he passed. When it was my turn, i asked for a little Rohrschach sketch and he gladly obliged, although he must have drawn him a million times now. We talked a little ( as much as i could manage, since i was incredibly nervous ) and i felt almost as a friend and not as a fanboy. When he finished the sketch, he personalized it to me, stood up, shook my hand and thanked me for coming, saying i should write him from time to time if i would like. I was so incredibly happy about this, that i totally forgot about all the books i had brought along with me from Germany for him to sign. Well, next time :-) This story may not sound like much, but it meant a lot to me. Dave is really a Gentleman and took a lot of time for his fans. Since then, i have been to several conventions, but never met an artist quite as friendly as Dave Gibbons ( maybe Steve Rude, who was also very nice to me at the Comicaction 2001 in Essen ). So that experience really made me a Dave Gibbons fan for live.                                           Now let’s hear your stories.........................

This is it. My dream come true. Full figure Rohrschach . Sorry for the bad scan, please click on it to see a larger version. Will work on that.

SAN DIEGO CON 1986

I read your "Meetings" with Dave Gibbons and it reflects the feelings I felt when I met Dave Gibbons at the 1986 San Diego Con.  This was when all of fandom was crazed with excitement over Watchmen and Dark Knight.  Dave Gibbons set up at a table at the back of the room. He was modest, friendly, and gracious. My friends and I all signed up for sketches and I asked for the Rorschach that is posted in the sketch gallery.  1986 was the year at San Diego when a group of artists got together and made a huge (maybe 3' x 5') poster board birthday card for Jack Kirby.  Gibbons was asked to draw something on the board and he drew a head shot of Dr. Manhattan.  Before he drew Dr. Manhattan on the board, he roughed it out with a blue ball point pen on a sheet of paper. When he finished the drawing, Gibbons was going to throw the rough away.  As he was about to crumple it up I said something like, "I'l! l take it if you're going to throw it away."  He smiled and handed it to me. The two sketches always remind me of what a nice guy Dave Gibbons was to all of his fans that weekend at San Diego.

BRISTOL COMICS2000

"I was part of the Comics2000 mailing list which just announces items for the upcoming British Comics Festival held in Bristol, England. While reading a message I realised that it was Dave Gibbons responding to a question put forward. I thought about it for awhile and decided to go for it.  I simply emailed him and pointed out that I had started a themed art collection based on the Wild West. I sent him scans of the few pieces I had already had done and simply asked if he was interested. This is where I believe I became one of the luckiest men in the art world. Dave had just completed a book and was about to start another and he liked my idea. So before starting his next assignment he did my piece. I had no idea what it was going to be as I leave those decisions for the artists. 2 months later Dave gave me the piece at Bristol where I was simply blown away. I was expecting a simple pen and ink piece and I ended up with a masterpiece and the centre of my collection. Dave doesn't do commissions but just once he faultered. I had never met Dave before that day but every year we have a chat and a drink and hopefully this May we will do so again. He's a true gentleman and a great comic artist who is good to ALL his fans and there are many.  Cheers Dave."
